Set Your Sights On Things Above
We so quickly get our eyes off God. Let's get back into

Why Duck Dynasty is importantDuck Dynasty is in all the news right now. I'm sure you've heard.
Thing is, I've seen various responses from my Christian friends. Most are very supportive of the Robertsons, as am I. But a few have expressed sentiments that have surprised me, frankly, though I probably shouldn't be surprised. Why do I think Duck Dynasty is important for Christians? Because A&E's response to this has proven to the Christian community that they do still have a voice in this culture. We've gotten so used to being the silent majority, that frankly we're surprised when a secular entity, like A&E, is affected by our opinion. Yes, Phil Robertson has the right to express his opinion. On the other hand, yes, A&E has a right to sever ties with someone they don't agree with. However, a corporation like A&E wants to keep its audience happy, and the audience has the right to boycott if they feel the need. So all in all, everyone in the situation is within their rights. A&E's capitulation to bring Duck Dynasty back is an example of a free market bowing to the will of the target audience. This is how the free market is supposed to work. I applaud it! It means, again, that Christians Do still have a voice and that we CAN effect positive change if we try. The second response I saw from Christians involves the money. I've seen a couple different responses from other Christians that include describing Phil Robertson as a millionaire, as if it's a dirty word. People, there's nothing wrong with being a millionaire. There's nothing unChristian about having money. I have no idea what he does with his money, and neither do you, most likely. Why do we act as if having money is a sin? Or that it automatically means he's been compromised? One thing I know about the show - the family uses it to spread the message about God. They get paid for the show - good for them. They unapologetically use it as a means to spread the gospel. They don't back down from that even when threatened with the loss of all that income. That response of theirs in and of itself should be proof that they are worthy of the blessing of monetary gain. Let's not look down on the Duck Dynasty clan because they've gotten money for their program. God blesses some people with lots of money because He knows they will glorify Him with it. Let God tell them how to use that money. And don't judge them because they're rich. So whether you watch Duck Dynasty or not, let's learn a couple lessons from the last week and all the hoopla. We can still be a positive influence in this culture. And let's glorify God, without apology, with EVERY resource God has blessed us with. |
