Set Your Sights On Things Above
We so quickly get our eyes off God. Let's get back into
perspective.

I stand with Veronica PartridgeI've never addressed clothing choices here before, for a reason. My decision regarding my own clothing was made a long time ago. I don't wear pants at all in public - only dresses or skirts. (by the way, no, it was not how I was raised, nor did I go this direction because of a preacher or a church pushing me. In fact my decision was made while under different preaching, while I was wearing basically what I wanted.)
Veronica Partridge has been in the news lately because of her sharing her own journey in this area. I feel for her, because frankly I've been judged based on what I wear, too. I've had people assume that I'm looking down on them because of my own conviction, the mere fact that I dress the way I do being taken as a comment on the rest of the world. I've had people assume that because I dress a certain way I MUST be judgmental towards others. I've had them say it right to me...sometimes behind my back. But then Veronica Partridge wrote her blog article: HERE She's courageous, because she got lots and lots of hate over this article she wrote, and she isn't lashing back in kind. I admire her for that. HERE is her response to all the hate she's been getting I wish things like this didn't occur - I wish she didn't get this sort of treatment from people just because she stated her conviction. Why is it that her statement about her conviction has caused such an outcry? Why does it have so many people being so defensive, and downright hateful? I read the article - she didn't say it in a mean way. She was gracious and discreet. She was clear that she considered this HER conviction, and was not in any way trying to push it onto anyone else. But let me tell ya, in my opinion, if she'd been talking about some other decision she'd made, I doubt that she'd have gotten such a hateful response. What if she'd declared to the world that she was going vegetarian? Would people automatically accuse her of hating meat-eaters? I doubt it... I say that because I've seen it. I've been on forum boards, I've been asked directly, and when I say I don't wear pants in public, I've gotten a diatribe about how I'm suddenly judging them. There are very few discussions that get more heated than this one. Maybe because it's us ladies? (Come on gals, you know it's mostly ladies that take umbrage at this issue.) To be clear, I am perfectly capable of having a conviction that doesn't involve my having an opinion about what anyone else might wear. By ALL indications, Veronica Partridge is also capable of this sort of thing. My fellow Christian ladies, we certainly must treat each other better than this. By all indications, Mrs. Veronica Partridge is quite capable of having an opinion and not visiting that opinion on everyone around her. She is allowed to share, and ought to be able to do so without getting the vitriolic response that she's gotten. So fellow Christians...stand up for her. Even if you don't agree with her personal conviction, you ought to at least stand up for her right to state her opinion. Everyone else gets to state theirs, why should she be excoriated for speaking hers? She did it in a kind, gracious manner, on her own personal blog. She isn't standing on a street corner accosting people as they drive by, nor is she standing in retail stores in the pants department, scrabbling at women trying to buy a pair of jeans. While in this instance, I do agree with her (though I go farther than she does), that's not my point. My point is that she shouldn't be attacked the way she has been. We shouldn't be judging another person based on their conviction. Having a stricter standard does not mean the person is judgmental. It means they've chosen to live/dress/eat/drink a certain way because they believe it glorifies God. If you then go around judging them for it, then you have become what you claim them to be. |
